One of my chief priorities as a literacy teacher is to support children in becoming lifelong readers. The best way to do this is simply to read regularly. To encourage this work, every trimester, each student and I will set a personal reading goal. This goal will reflect the student's reading levels and stamina. Some students may plan to read a certain number of minutes nightly, while others may prefer to set a goal of a number of books to read per week. Goals will also include a discussion of the types of books and reading habits.

Reading Logs

Every week on Friday, students will turn in a list of the reading that he or she has completed that week. For most students this will be a reading log. The requirement is to read for 20+ minutes per night, for a total of 80 minutes per regular school week. Reading logs must have a parent signature to verify that the student has read the required amount. Usually, the reading log will also come with a reading assignment on the back in which the student will be responsible for practicing a reading strategy that was taught in class. Each week or two, there will be a new strategy to practice. Make sure to carefully follow the instructions for each assignment.

Supporting Reading at Home

Encourage your child to read nightly, even on weekends. To help assist their growth as a reader, it is important for students to constantly talk about what they reading. The following link is a tool that will help encourage conversations about books. Please use it as needed.
